Photoshop's Generative Fill lets users highlight any part of an image and type a description to add, replace, or remove objects — for example, changing a background or removing a person. Generative Expand extends a photo beyond its original edges to fill in new scenery. Both features launched in Photoshop in 2023 and were named among TIME magazine's Best Inventions of 2023.

Both features are powered by the Firefly Image Model and work non-destructively, creating separate "Generative Layers" that users can adjust or delete without altering the original. The AI matches perspective, lighting, and style to blend seamlessly with existing content and generates three variations per prompt for the user to choose from. Adobe confirmed over 100 million assets were generated during the beta period before the September 2023 general availability launch.
