Apple's App Store review process has two layers: automated scanning and human review. Automated tools are used to detect malware, "bait-and-switch" apps (apps that change their behavior after approval), spam reviews, and content that violates Apple's Media Services Terms. In its DSA transparency reports, Apple discloses that automated tools proactively filter reviews before publication and assist human specialists in ongoing monitoring. The tools raise flags for human review rather than making final moderation decisions autonomously. In 2023, Apple reported over 221,000 content moderation actions detected solely using automated means during one reporting period.
