Logic Pro's Stem Splitter uses AI to separate a single mixed audio recording — like a finished song — into up to six individual components: drums, bass, vocals, guitar, piano, and other instruments. Stem separation is an AI technique that analyzes the combined sound waves in a recording and isolates the underlying instruments by learning the characteristic patterns of each. Apple's implementation runs entirely on-device using Apple Silicon chips and does not send audio to a server. This puts Apple's tool in competition with standalone AI audio services that perform similar separations in the cloud. The feature was part of the Logic Pro 11 update alongside Session Players.
