Writing Tools are part of the Apple Intelligence suite, powered by on-device and cloud-based foundation models (language models trained to perform multiple tasks). They appear as a system-wide overlay in any text field and offer actions like Rewrite, Proofread, Summarize, and — added with iOS 18.2 — a Compose option powered by ChatGPT that can generate text from scratch. Apple processes requests using its Private Cloud Compute system, which Apple states is designed to keep user data private and not stored by Apple. The tools work across Apple's own apps and in third-party applications that support the standard text editing APIs.
