The original Image Playground and Genmoji launched with iOS 18.2 in December 2024, powered by on-device text-to-image models running on Apple's A17 Pro and M-series chips, restricted to non-photorealistic styles (Animation, Illustration, Sketch) to prevent misleading outputs. At WWDC 2026, Apple announced a rebuilt Image Playground running on a new generative model via Private Cloud Compute, adding photorealistic output and touch-based editing for the first time. All AI-generated images in the new version automatically receive a hidden SynthID watermark to identify them as AI-generated. The updated Image Playground is expected to ship with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. The feature is available to third-party developers via an Image Playground API.
