The redesigned Siri uses Apple's own large language model — a type of AI trained on large amounts of text to understand and generate human-like responses — to improve comprehension. For queries that exceed Siri's capabilities, users are offered the option to send their question to OpenAI's ChatGPT (using the GPT-4o model) without needing a ChatGPT account. Apple states that when ChatGPT is used, user IP addresses are hidden from OpenAI and requests are not stored. A further upgrade enabling Siri to understand personal context (like emails, messages, and calendar data) and take actions within apps was announced but faced delays into 2025 and 2026. In January 2026, Apple announced a partnership with Google to incorporate Gemini models into future Siri capabilities.
