Big Cartel offers an opt-in feature called AI Shield that adds named AI training crawlers and one AI shopping assistant to a shop's robots.txt file, blocking those bots from indexing seller content. The feature is available across all plan tiers, including the free Gold plan, and is disabled by default.

AI Shield blocks 10 named AI training crawlers (including GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, CCBot, and Bytespider) and Amazon's "Buy for Me" shopping agent via robots.txt directives. Traditional search engine bots and AI citation crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot) are explicitly excluded to preserve seller discoverability. The feature is not retroactive, relies on voluntary compliance by named crawlers, and includes no technical enforcement mechanism.
