Cohere's nonprofit research lab, Cohere Labs, offers the Aya family of open-source multilingual language models designed to expand AI access to underrepresented languages. The Aya models cover up to 101 languages and are freely available for research, but not permitted for commercial use.

The Aya family includes Aya 101 (covering 101 languages, released February 2024), Aya Expanse (23 languages, released October 2024), Aya Vision (a multimodal model supporting 23 languages that can describe images and translate text, released March 2025), and Tiny Aya (a compact 3.35B-parameter model supporting 70+ languages, released February 2026). All models are released as open weights under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial license. Aya Vision was developed with the involvement of over 3,000 researchers from 119 countries.
