Meta announced the AI sticker feature at its Connect event on September 27, 2023, with a rollout to select English-language users beginning in October 2023. The pipeline uses Llama 2 to understand the text prompt and Meta's Emu image model to generate multiple unique sticker images from that prompt in seconds. Shortly after launch, users bypassed content filters by using intentional misspellings, producing stickers depicting copyrighted characters with weapons and sexualized images of public figures. Meta updated its filters within days of these reports.
