Copilot in Power BI lets business users ask questions about their data in plain English and get charts, summaries, and reports back automatically — no spreadsheet formulas or technical skills required. It became generally available in June 2024 for enterprise customers using premium Microsoft data licenses.

Launched in public preview in November 2023 as part of Microsoft Fabric (Microsoft's unified data platform), Copilot in Power BI reached general availability on June 3, 2024. Users can describe what they want — for example, "show me sales by region last quarter" — and the AI builds a full report page. Under the hood, it uses machine learning models to generate DAX queries (the formula language used in Power BI) and produce visual summaries. Microsoft stated that Copilot is intended to augment analysts, not replace them, enabling faster work rather than eliminating the need for human judgment. A standalone full-screen Copilot experience was introduced in preview in May 2025.
