MITRE deployed an internal generative AI tool called MITREChatGPT — built on OpenAI's GPT-4 — for use by its approximately 10,000 employees starting in May 2023. The tool helps staff research, write reports, generate code, and analyze large policy and legislative documents significantly faster than before.

MITREChatGPT is integrated with MITRE's internal knowledge base and project repositories, and uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to reason over thousands of internal documents. By June 2024 it had been adopted by more than 60% of MITRE's workforce, and the organization reported average task completion time reductions of 10–30%. The tool also supports coding assistance, idea generation, and quality assurance. MITRE has enhanced it to fulfill requests for information from six federally funded U.S. agencies including the Department of Defense and the FAA.
