OverDrive uses AI to analyze how ebooks and audiobooks circulate across library systems and help librarians decide which licensing model to use for each title. This builds on OverDrive's existing Insights analytics dashboard, which has been available to libraries since around 2015.

Details

According to Library Journal's 2024 reporting, OverDrive applies machine learning to transactional data — records of which titles are borrowed, by how many patrons, and under what conditions — to give librarians guidance on the most cost-effective licensing approach for individual titles. OverDrive offers several licensing models including One Copy/One User, Cost Per Circ, Simultaneous Use, and OverDrive Max bundles, and the AI layer is designed to help libraries balance access and budget by predicting the lifecycle value of each title. This capability supplements the existing rule-based OverDrive Insights platform, adding predictive capability on top of historical reporting.
