Maven Smart System integrates data from multiple military intelligence sources, including satellite imagery, drone footage, geolocation data, and communications, and uses machine learning models including computer vision to identify objects such as vehicles and military assets. The system presents findings to human analysts, who retain responsibility for final targeting decisions. The DoD awarded Palantir an initial $480 million, five-year contract for the Maven Smart System in May 2024 and expanded the contract ceiling to $1.3 billion through 2029 in May 2025. In March 2025, NATO acquired MSS for use within Allied Command Operations. On March 9, 2026, Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg signed a memo directing MSS to be designated an official program of record by the end of fiscal year 2026 (September 2026), which would embed it across the U.S. military with stable, long-term funding. Palantir states its software does not make lethal decisions and that humans remain responsible for selecting and approving targets.
