Each SymBot uses multiple RGB cameras, a 3D camera, LiDAR sensors, and an onboard neural processor to perceive its environment and make navigation decisions independently. The robots operate collectively, dynamically rerouting around obstacles or anomalies without stopping operations. Symbotic describes this as approaching 'lights-out' operation — meaning the warehouse can run at full capacity with minimal human intervention on the floor. In FY2025, SymBots showed a 25% increase in miles driven and transactions completed per robot per day compared to the prior year. Symbotic's CTO, James Kuffner, is a veteran robotics researcher who previously held roles at Google's robotics division.
