UMass Amherst leads a research center called MassAITC, funded by a $20 million federal grant from the National Institute on Aging, that develops AI tools using wearable sensors and contactless monitoring devices to improve care for older adults and people with Alzheimer's disease.

MassAITC (the Massachusetts AI and Technology Center for Connected Care in Aging and Alzheimer's Disease) was launched in November 2021 with a grant from the National Institutes of Health (grant P30AG073107). It is co-led by CICS professors Deepak Ganesan and Benjamin Marlin and partners with Brigham and Women's Hospital, Mass General Hospital, Brandeis University, and Northeastern University. The center acts as a research accelerator — funding smaller pilot projects and moving them toward clinical deployment. Through three rounds of funding, it has distributed over $4 million in pilot grants to researchers developing machine learning tools for patient monitoring, cognitive assessment, and caregiver support.
