GenAI.mil launched on December 9, 2025, with Google's Gemini for Government as its first model, and is managed by the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO). It is authorized to handle Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) at Impact Level 5 (IL5), meaning it can be used for sensitive but unclassified official work. The platform supports file uploads in multiple formats (PDF, DOCX, PPTX, images), provides Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) for document-grounded responses, persistent chat histories, and secure web grounding. By February 2026, five of the six military branches had formally adopted it as their preferred enterprise AI system, with over 1.1 million unique users reported; xAI's Grok and OpenAI's ChatGPT joined the platform in early 2026.
