Walmart developed its route optimization system internally over several years. It won the Franz Edelman Award, given by the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences to recognize impactful real-world applications of operations research. On March 14, 2024, Walmart Commerce Technologies commercialized the system as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) product called Route Optimization. For last-mile home deliveries, Walmart also runs an End-to-End Agentic Workflow — a multi-agent AI architecture where specialized digital agents continuously make micro-decisions about route assignment, driver availability, and order sequencing. A Dynamic Delivery Window System replaces fixed delivery time promises with real-time estimates updated to the minute as conditions change.
