The image was shared on January 4, 2024 to promote Ravnica Remastered, an MTG card set. Community members identified hallmarks of AI-generated art — including distorted light fixtures, cables disappearing into walls, and physically impossible details. WotC's initial public statement claimed the image was made entirely by humans. Three days later, the company reversed its position, acknowledging that some AI components had been introduced through "industry standard tools like Photoshop" during the vendor's production process, even though a human oversaw the overall creative work. The reversal damaged trust and led prominent freelance artist Dave Rapoza to publicly end his relationship with WotC.
