The book in question was Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants, a D&D 5th Edition sourcebook. Fans spotted visual inconsistencies typical of generative AI — distorted anatomy, impossible geometry — in illustrations by Ilya Shkipin, a contributor to WotC since 2014. Shkipin confirmed he had used AI tools to enhance the artwork. WotC acknowledged the situation on August 5, 2023, removed the affected art from the D&D Beyond digital platform, and commissioned human artists to create replacements. The incident prompted WotC to update its contributor guidelines to require artists to "refrain from using AI art generation as part of their art creation process" for final D&D products.
