A24 integrated an AI voice synthesis tool called Respeecher into the post-production of its film The Brutalist (2024) to enhance the Hungarian-language dialogue spoken by lead actors Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones. The tool adjusted specific vowel and consonant sounds to make the actors' Hungarian more authentic to native speakers.
Details
The Brutalist's editor, Dávid Jancsó, disclosed in a January 2025 interview with Red Shark News that AI tools from Ukrainian company Respeecher were used to tweak specific vowels and letters in the Hungarian dialogue spoken by Brody and Jones. Respeecher works by taking a reference speaker's phonetic characteristics and applying them to another speaker's recorded audio. Director Brady Corbet clarified in a statement to Deadline that only certain Hungarian-language lines were affected and that no English-language dialogue was altered; both actors had also worked extensively with a dialect coach prior to filming. The use of AI in a film that went on to receive ten Academy Award nominations drew public debate about AI's role in performance and awards eligibility.
