Corel Painter uses convolutional neural network (CNN)-based style transfer to take a source photo, sketch, or existing painting as input and produce a stylized painting output that replicates the texture and appearance of styles such as impressionism, charcoal, or acrylic. The AI Styles feature was introduced in Corel Painter 2021 (released June 2020) with 12 curated styles; it uses Apple's Core ML framework for optimization on Mac hardware. The core style transfer technology was first introduced in Corel Painter Essentials 7 (released October 2019) with 8 AI-based auto-painting presets, each trained to recreate the look of real-world source images such as pencil drawings and oil or watercolor paintings.
