In a March 2021 patch for the PS5 version of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Insomniac added ZivaRT support to select character suits. ZivaRT is a machine learning-based deformation system that takes high-quality mesh shapes and poses as input, trains a model to predict how muscles and cloth deform frame-by-frame, and runs that model in real time on PS5 hardware. Lead Character Technical Director Josh DiCarlo confirmed via public statements that all final deformations are produced via machine learning inference at runtime on the PS5, with no traditional blendshapes or skin decomposition. The technology was developed by Ziva Dynamics, later acquired by Unity in January 2022.
Insomniac Games was named as one of the companies in a convenience bargaining group that SAG-AFTRA struck starting July 26, 2024, over the group's refusal to include enforceable AI protections for voice actors and motion capture performers.
SAG-AFTRA officially named Insomniac Games Inc. as part of the convenience bargaining group against which it initiated a video game strike on July 26, 2024. The strike centered on the group's refusal to provide 'clear and enforceable language' protecting performers from AI replication of their voices and likenesses without consent or fair compensation. The strike was suspended on June 11, 2025, after a tentative agreement was reached between SAG-AFTRA and the companies in the bargaining group, including Insomniac Games. The specific terms of the agreement had not been publicly disclosed as of the strike suspension announcement.
Insomniac Games integrated Sony's AI-powered PSSR upscaling technology into its PS5 Pro updates for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and separately integrated NVIDIA DLSS into the PC version of Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
In November 2024, Insomniac deployed PS5 Pro support updates for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, both using Sony's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology. PSSR is an AI-based upscaling system that renders games at a lower internal resolution and uses machine learning to reconstruct a higher-quality 4K image. Core Technology Director Mike Fitzgerald confirmed the Spider-Man 2 PS5 Pro update in an official PlayStation.com statement. Separately, Insomniac integrated NVIDIA DLSS (including DLSS 4 with the Transformer model as of Patch 10 in May 2025) into the PC version of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, providing AI-based upscaling and frame generation options for PC players.
