Insomniac Games integrated a third-party machine learning tool called ZivaRT into Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS5, enabling real-time simulation of realistic muscle, skin, and cloth movement on character models.

Details

In a March 2021 patch for the PS5 version of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Insomniac added ZivaRT support to select character suits. ZivaRT is a machine learning-based deformation system that takes high-quality mesh shapes and poses as input, trains a model to predict how muscles and cloth deform frame-by-frame, and runs that model in real time on PS5 hardware. Lead Character Technical Director Josh DiCarlo confirmed via public statements that all final deformations are produced via machine learning inference at runtime on the PS5, with no traditional blendshapes or skin decomposition. The technology was developed by Ziva Dynamics, later acquired by Unity in January 2022.
