The system was developed by Solaria Labs starting in 2018 and is trained on anonymized historical claims photos.

The AI Auto Damage Estimator uses computer vision and machine learning to analyze customer-submitted photos and video of vehicle damage, detecting factors such as whether airbags have deployed and estimating whether a vehicle is a total loss or has limited damage. The model is trained on anonymized claims photos and draws on the company's dataset of 200 million data points and 5 million historical claims. Liberty Mutual also partners with computer-vision insurtech Inspektlabs for a mobile flow where customers upload photos and videos and receive an automated damage assessment. The output is described as a 'ballpark' or preliminary estimate; human appraisers remain involved in finalizing settlements. The Liberty Mutual consumer app directs users to the Express Estimate feature to submit photos and receive an estimate.
