The program began as a proof-of-concept pilot with 18 physicians in July 2023, testing two AI scribe products: Nuance Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) and Abridge. By April 2025, the tools were made available to all Mass General Brigham physicians, with more than 3,000 providers routinely using them, and subsequent reports indicate that figure grew to over 4,000. A study published in JAMA Network Open found a 21.2% absolute reduction in physician burnout prevalence at 84 days. The program also explored a hybrid model pairing AI drafts with a remote human scribe, which showed a 41% decrease in after-hours EHR time and a 66% drop in notes left incomplete two days after a visit.
