Sony Interactive Entertainment deployed Gran Turismo Sophy, an AI racing agent built using deep reinforcement learning, as a playable opponent in Gran Turismo 7 for PS5 players globally starting in 2023.

GT Sophy was developed in collaboration between Sony AI, Polyphony Digital (a PlayStation Studios subsidiary), and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The agent was trained using a novel deep reinforcement learning platform and can drive over 340 cars across 19 tracks in GT7. GT Sophy 2.0 launched as a permanent feature in November 2023 via the GT7 Spec II update; GT Sophy 2.1 followed in March 2025 adding Custom Race mode support. The system runs on the PS5's hardware in real time. Players can select GT Sophy as a race rival across multiple difficulty levels.
