Sony Interactive Entertainment deployed PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), a machine learning-based image upscaling system built into the PS5 Pro console, which analyzes game images pixel by pixel to reconstruct sharper, higher-resolution visuals in real time.
Details
PSSR is an AI library co-developed with AMD under a partnership called Project Amethyst. It takes a lower internal render resolution and uses a neural network to upscale the output, allowing games to target 4K visuals at high frame rates. An upgraded version of PSSR launched in March 2026, introducing a revised neural network and algorithm with six additional months of refinement; it has been used in over 50 titles on PS5 Pro. The system runs on custom machine learning hardware integrated into the PS5 Pro's GPU.
