Walmart's technology team built and deployed a set of AI-powered tools to help software engineers work faster. These include a coding assistant called Code Buddy, an internal question-answering assistant called DX AI Assistant, and a diagram-generation tool called ArchiText. Walmart says these tools saved its developers around 4 million hours in a single year.

The tools were announced in an October 2024 Walmart Global Tech blog post. Code Buddy helps developers write unit tests, understand existing code, and debug problems; AI-generated code goes through multi-stage checks for accuracy, security, and compliance before being accepted. The DX AI Assistant answers Walmart-specific questions about internal tools and systems, saving developers an average of 5 minutes per question. ArchiText converts a text description into a technical diagram called a UML (Unified Modeling Language) diagram 69% faster than doing it manually, saving approximately 31 minutes per diagram. Coding assistance has been deployed to engineers in North America and India. Walmart has also stated its goal of embedding generative AI into every stage of the software development process within three years.
