Chipotle tested an AI-powered kitchen management system built by PreciTaste in select Southern California restaurants starting September 2022. The PreciTaste system, described by Chipotle as a 'cook-to-needs' platform, uses cameras and sensors to monitor food pan fill levels on the front and digital makelines. It combines this real-time data with demand forecasting — incorporating historical sales patterns and customer traffic data — to generate cooking alerts for grill operators, specifying how many portions to prepare and when. Early results from a pilot in eight Orange County restaurants showed the system was effective at streamlining operations and ensuring fresh ingredients. Chipotle's Data Science Manager publicly detailed the integration of PreciTaste with Chipotle's cloud data infrastructure (Azure, Snowflake) at an H2O World conference.
