Amazon Robotics deployed AR ID (Amazon Robotics Identification), an AI-powered computer vision system that automatically scans package barcodes as employees handle them in fulfillment and sortation centers, removing the need for manual handheld scanning. The technology was later extended to delivery vans under the name VAPR.

AR ID uses a freestanding camera system running at 120 frames per second to locate and read barcodes in real time while employees handle packages with both hands. Amazon created AR ID based on employee feedback about the difficulty of manually scanning packages with a handheld device. According to Amazon's official announcement, the system was developed using computer vision and machine learning. The technology was later adapted for in-van delivery use as Vision-Assisted Package Retrieval (VAPR), deployed in 1,000 Rivian electric delivery vans by early 2025.
