Announced in September 2023 and launched publicly in February 2025, Alexa+ replaced the previous rule-based Alexa architecture with a multi-LLM routing system using Amazon's Nova models and Anthropic's Claude. Unlike classic Alexa, which handled one request at a time, Alexa+ can string together multiple API calls to complete complex tasks — such as booking a restaurant, sending a text to a friend, and scheduling an Uber simultaneously. Priced at $19.99/month (free for Prime members), Alexa+ was described as "rebuilt from the ground up" with agentic capabilities that allow it to navigate websites and complete tasks on users' behalf. Amazon faced criticism for years of delays after originally demoing the feature in 2023.
