Narrators who opt in submit sample recordings, which ACX converts into a voice replica using AI voice cloning technology. For each audiobook project, the narrator decides independently whether to use their replica or record live. They can adjust pronunciation, pacing, and tone, and must approve the final narration before publication. Audible states it will not use a narrator's replica without explicit consent for each use. Compensation is available via per-finished-hour fees, a royalty share, or a blended model (the blended model was added in July 2025). All titles produced this way are labeled to disclose the use of a voice replica. The program is U.S.-only as of the time of research. SAG-AFTRA, the union representing many professional narrators, issued a "No Contract, No Work" order in May 2023 prohibiting members from licensing their voices for AI-generated narration unless the company is a SAG-AFTRA signatory.
