Larian Studios uses generative AI internally for whiteboxing (generating rough placeholder level geometry for designers to test), and uses machine learning in its cinematics and animation pipeline for tasks such as motion-capture cleaning and animation retargeting. The studio is also testing an AI-assisted narrative validation system that would flag script inconsistencies for human writers, though CEO Swen Vincke acknowledged in 2025 that the technology is not yet ready for that use. A January 2026 Reddit AMA confirmed no AI-generated text or art appears in any Larian game.

In a 2025 GameSpot interview, Vincke confirmed that Larian uses generative AI during whiteboxing: rough placeholder level geometry is AI-generated so designers can test layouts quickly, and that generated geometry is replaced by hand-built art before shipping. Vincke also described experimenting with narrative validation, an AI-assisted system that would alert writers when a script change creates an inconsistency elsewhere in the branching dialogue, but said the technology was not yet ready. In the January 9, 2026 Reddit AMA, machine learning director Gabriel Bosque confirmed that ML-generated assets are used in the cinematics and animation pipeline for tasks such as motion-capture cleaning and retargeting. Writing director Adam Smith stated in the same AMA that no AI text generation touches dialogue, journal entries, or other writing in Divinity, and that a limited internal text-generation experiment produced results rated 3 out of 10 at best. Vincke confirmed in the AMA that no GenAI art would appear in Divinity, and that any AI model used to create in-game assets would be trained on data Larian owns.

Creative GenLarian uses machine learning models to clean up and adapt motion capture data from human actors so it can be applied to game characters of wildly different body shapes — like a tiny halfling or a towering dragonborn. These models are trained only on data Larian owns, and their output appears in shipped games.Creative GenLarian's artists experimented with generative AI tools to explore rough visual ideas at the very earliest stage of concept art development — similar to how a designer might flip through reference books. After significant backlash from fans and former employees in December 2025, the studio formally banned generative AI from all concept art work in January 2026.Creative GenA small group at Larian Studios tested generative AI text generation tools for research purposes during early development of Divinity, the studio's next RPG. Writing Director Adam Smith stated at a January 9, 2026 Reddit AMA that the tools scored '3/10 at best' and that no AI-generated text touches dialogue, journal entries, or any other written content in Divinity.
