Announced September 30, 2025 as part of Refresh 2025, the AI-Powered Image and Video Backgrounds feature gives users access to pre-generated, curated background assets directly within the site editor. According to Squarespace's CPO Paul Gubbay, the imagery was created using a proprietary prompting approach developed by Squarespace's design team, which specified the aesthetic style and curated results before making them available to users. Squarespace did not train the underlying AI image models itself; a secondary source reports that it uses publicly available models from Google (Gemini/Imagen), OpenAI (DALL-E), and Anthropic, combined in proprietary ways. The Squarespace Help Center confirms that AI-created images and text are generated with the aid of third-party AI software. At the time of announcement, AI video backgrounds were listed as coming soon for some users, indicating a phased rollout.
