According to Udio's CEO, the platform runs automated filters designed to stop the AI from recreating copyrighted recordings. Following a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by the RIAA on behalf of Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group in June 2024, Udio settled with UMG in October 2025. As part of that settlement, Udio agreed to transition to a new platform trained only on authorized and licensed music, and to apply fingerprinting, filtering, and other measures to its existing service during the transition period. The technical details of how the filters detect potential copyright violations have not been publicly disclosed.
