UMass Memorial Health uses AI to automatically assign billing codes for radiology procedures, raising its automated coding rate in the radiology department from approximately 70% to 86%.

The system automates the assignment of standardized billing codes for simpler radiology procedures, while human coders handle more complex cases. The health system adopted AI coding in response to a shortage of certified medical coders and to eliminate overtime and backlogs. As of available sources, UMass Memorial was also expanding AI coding to its pathology department and planning future expansion to endoscopy coding.
