UMass Memorial Health deployed KATE AI, a nurse-first AI platform, across all seven of its hospital emergency departments to help nurses assess patient severity and detect potential sepsis earlier during triage.

KATE AI integrates with UMass Memorial's Epic electronic health record (EHR) system to analyze patient data in real time and compare nurse-assigned Emergency Severity Index (ESI) scores against the patient's full medical record, flagging discrepancies for nurse review. The system also runs sepsis detection algorithms that can identify potential sepsis cases before lab results are available. A pilot launched at UMass Memorial Medical Center in February 2023 was expanded system-wide across seven emergency departments by April 2025.
