UMass Memorial Health deployed a virtual patient observation program using Caregility video technology, allowing a single care team member to remotely monitor up to six at-risk inpatients at once from a centralized hub.
Details
The program began rolling out in fall 2020 across acute and critical care units at multiple campuses. Virtual patient care assistants stationed at a remote observation hub monitor patients via video to detect unsafe behaviors — such as attempts to leave a bed — and intervene via audio alerts or by contacting bedside nurses. The program logs more than 12,000 patient interventions monthly. UMass Memorial was also planning to expand AI-enhanced Caregility hardware (the APS200) into a new 72-bed inpatient facility for use cases including virtual sitting, virtual rounding, patient-family communication, and tele-ICU care.
