Announced September 25, 2025, UMG and Sony Music partnered with SoundPatrol — a Stanford University-origin research lab — on a patent-pending forensic AI model for audio-video fingerprinting. Unlike traditional audio fingerprinting that matches exact audio snippets, SoundPatrol's system uses neural embeddings to capture musical semantics and identify the influence of original recordings in AI-generated content. The tool is designed to detect copyright infringement including in AI-generated music. SoundPatrol also plans to make tools available to third-party platforms and research labs to proactively prevent violations.
