Amazon acquired Kiva Systems in 2012 for $775 million, rebranding it as Amazon Robotics in 2015. Its fleet now includes specialized systems: Hercules (moves inventory pods), Titan (handles heavy items), Sequoia (uses AI and computer vision to consolidate inventory 75% faster), Vulcan (a robotic arm that picks and stows ~75% of item types), and DeepFleet (an AI system coordinating the million-robot fleet, improving travel time by 10%). A fully automated fulfillment center launched in Shreveport, Louisiana in 2024 uses eight distinct robotic systems working in tandem. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy acknowledged in 2025 that AI and robotics will lead to workforce reductions in some roles.
