Putnam Investments deployed a cloud-first DevOps test data management platform that automates the provisioning of software testing environments for internal development teams. The platform allows engineering teams to rapidly spin up fresh data environments instead of manually setting up test data for each software release cycle.

Digital leadership at Putnam Investments recognized the need to deliver software faster to match evolving customer needs, and tasked its engineering team with building a new cloud-based technology architecture using continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) practices. The resulting platform automates the creation of test data environments, reducing the manual effort previously required by developers and quality assurance teams. The project was recognized with a CIO 100 Award in 2024, with Joseph Gaffney (then at Putnam, later VP of IT at Franklin Templeton) cited as the project sponsor. CI/CD is an engineering approach where software is built, tested, and released in small, frequent increments rather than large, infrequent batches.
