Granite models span multiple modalities: language, code, time series forecasting, speech transcription, vision (document and image understanding), and embedding. IBM also produces Granite Guardian models designed to detect harmful content, bias, hallucinations, and jailbreak attempts in AI systems. The models are available on IBM's watsonx.ai platform and on Hugging Face. IBM provides IP indemnification for enterprise customers using IBM-developed Granite models, and publishes training data documentation as part of its transparency commitment.
IBM offers watsonx Orchestrate, a platform that lets businesses build, deploy, and manage AI agents that automate multi-step workflows across enterprise systems like HR, sales, procurement, and customer care, generally available since March 2024.
Watsonx Orchestrate connects to over 700 enterprise systems and offers pre-built agents for business functions including HR (onboarding, time-off requests, payslip retrieval), sales (lead qualification, CRM updates), and procurement (supplier tracking, contract renewal). Businesses can create custom agents using a no-code studio or a developer toolkit. IBM uses the product internally: its AskHR deployment reportedly handles over 10 million employee interactions annually. The platform supports multi-agent coordination, where a supervisor agent routes tasks among specialized sub-agents.
IBM offers watsonx Code Assistant, a generative AI tool that helps software developers write, explain, and modernize code using natural language prompts, available as a commercial product since October 2023.
Watsonx Code Assistant is powered by IBM's Granite foundation models and integrates directly into developer IDEs such as Visual Studio Code. It supports code generation, code explanation, documentation creation, unit test generation, and language translation (e.g., COBOL to Java). A specialized variant, watsonx Code Assistant for Z, targets mainframe application modernization. A separate variant for Red Hat Ansible Lightspeed generates IT automation playbooks from plain-English prompts.
