ModerationPractice documented: Redbubble deployed a machine learning-based content moderation system that automatically scans artist-uploaded images and text for unauthorized use of copyrighted logos, offensive material, and potential trademark violations. The system flags likely violations for human review or removes content automatically, operating across Redbubble's global marketplace.

Data AnalysisPractice documented: Redbubble uses AI to automatically analyze and enrich the metadata attached to the more than 60 million designs on its marketplace, reducing the platform's dependence on artist-supplied titles, descriptions, and tags to accurately describe each piece of artwork. This enriched data is then used to improve search relevance and product discovery for shoppers.

The system flags likely violations for human review or removes content automatically, operating across Redbubble's global marketplace.
Working with technology consulting firm DiUS and image recognition vendor VISUA, Redbubble built an automated computer vision pipeline to detect infringing and offensive content at scale. Prior to this, a team of approximately 60 human reviewers manually vetted uploads, but a surge in content volume during COVID-19 made the manual process unsustainable. The ML-based solution achieved approximately 80% accuracy in detecting infringing content; borderline cases (such as artworks that reference but transform a copyrighted logo) are still escalated to human reviewers to make the final call. Following success with copyright imagery, Redbubble extended a similar approach to trademark text detection.

Redbubble integrated Rokt's machine learning technology in 2023 to show personalized post-purchase offers to shoppers immediately after they complete a transaction on the marketplace. The integration is live across eight countries.
Redbubble expanded its partnership with Rokt, an ecommerce technology company, as announced in October 2023. Rokt's machine learning system analyzes each transaction in real time to determine which post-purchase offers — such as promotions or related products — are most likely to be relevant and engaging for that specific customer. The integration was live across eight regions (US, AU, NZ, CA, UK, FR, DE, and ES) at the time of the announcement. Redbubble reported generating nearly $500,000 in incremental revenue across millions of transactions since launching the partnership.
Redbubble uses AI to automatically analyze and enrich the metadata attached to the more than 60 million designs on its marketplace, reducing the platform's dependence on artist-supplied titles, descriptions, and tags to accurately describe each piece of artwork. This enriched data is then used to improve search relevance and product discovery for shoppers.
Redbubble's CEO Michael Ilczynski publicly described this initiative in February 2023, explaining that the platform's search had historically relied entirely on data provided by artists, which was often inaccurate or incomplete, sometimes deliberately so. Because manual review of 60 million-plus individual designs was not feasible, Redbubble turned to AI to 'objectively enrich the data on every piece of content,' enabling accurate text descriptions to be generated independently of artist input. The enriched metadata feeds both on-site search and off-site marketing channels. This initiative was described as enabling the platform to 'place the right design in front of the right consumer every time.'
