Practice documented: iRobot deployed AI-based home mapping and navigation systems across its Wi-Fi-connected Roomba robot vacuums, enabling robots to build and remember floor plans of users' homes, navigate rooms systematically, and allow users to direct cleaning to specific rooms or zones. This capability has been progressively expanded since its introduction in the Roomba 980 in 2015.

Recommendation

Practice documented: iRobot deployed iRobot OS across its Wi-Fi-connected Roomba and Braava robot products to analyze each user's cleaning history and habits and offer personalized schedule recommendations, suggested clean zones, and keep-out zone proposals through the iRobot Home App. This platform launched publicly in August 2020 as iRobot Genius and was rebranded as iRobot OS in May 2022.

Data Analysis

Practice documented: iRobot deployed Dirt Detective, an AI feature in select Roomba j9-series robot vacuums, that analyzes past cleaning history to predict which rooms are dirtiest and automatically determines the order and intensity of each cleaning session without user input. The feature launched in September 2023 and was extended to the Roomba Combo 10 Max in July 2024.

Recommendation SystemVerified

iRobot deployed iRobot OS across its Wi-Fi-connected Roomba and Braava robot products to analyze each user's cleaning history and habits and offer personalized schedule recommendations, suggested clean zones, and keep-out zone proposals through the iRobot Home App. This platform launched publicly in August 2020 as iRobot Genius and was rebranded as iRobot OS in May 2022.

Using machine learning, iRobot OS tracks cleaning frequency, locations of dirt events, areas where the robot has gotten stuck, and user schedules to proactively surface recommendations such as adding a precision clean zone near a kitchen table or avoiding a tangle-prone area near a TV stand. The system also provides seasonal suggestions, such as more frequent cleaning during pet-shedding season, and uses phone geolocation (when enabled) to trigger cleaning sessions when the user leaves home. The platform works across all current Wi-Fi-connected Roomba, Roomba Combo, and Braava jet robots.

Data AnalysisVerified

iRobot deployed Enhanced Dirt Detect Technology in the Roomba Combo 10 Max (2024), adding camera-based visual analysis to existing sensor-based dirt detection so the robot can spot dirty floor areas and make multiple cleaning passes in those spots up to eight times more frequently than previous models.

Earlier Roomba models used acoustic and optical sensors to detect concentrations of debris, triggering Dirt Detect mode. The Roomba Combo 10 Max extended this with a camera that visually pinpoints dirt on the floor surface, enabling the robot to identify the dirtiest areas more reliably and increase targeted repeat passes. This enhancement is part of the iRobot OS intelligence platform and works alongside the machine learning-based mapping system.

iRobot deployed AI-based home mapping and navigation systems across its Wi-Fi-connected Roomba robot vacuums, enabling robots to build and remember floor plans of users' homes, navigate rooms systematically, and allow users to direct cleaning to specific rooms or zones. This capability has been progressively expanded since its introduction in the Roomba 980 in 2015.

The foundational technology, called vSLAM (Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), uses camera-based landmark recognition to build a spatial map as the robot moves. More recent models use iAdapt 3.0 Navigation with Imprint Smart Maps, storing maps of multiple floors and auto-labeling rooms. The Roomba Combo 10 Max (2024) added machine learning to create complete home maps seven times faster and automatically label room types. Maps are stored in the iRobot Home App and enable room-by-room scheduling, custom clean zones, and keep-out zones.
